According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, approximately 53,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral cancer this year. This disease can be devastating, and its early symptoms often mimic those of other oral health issues, making it easy for oral cancer to go undetected. To help detect potential issues early, call Timeless Dental at 281-681-3300 in The Woodlands, Texas, to schedule an appointment with Dr. John Rodriquez for an oral cancer screening. Using the advanced VELscope® system, we can detect potential health issues with fluorescent light technology, often identifying concerns that might be missed with the naked eye.
The Visual Exam
The screening includes both a visual and physical examination of the entire oral cavity and oropharyngeal areas (the soft palate, tonsils, and the walls of the throat). We also examine the face, neck, and inside the nose.
During the exam, patients must remove all removable dental appliances to fully expose all areas for inspection. Dr. Rodriquez will look for asymmetries, swellings, bumps, ulcerations, and patches of unusual color.
This part of the screening uses basic tools like a light, a mirror, and a tongue depressor, similar to a typical physical exam. Additional instruments may be used to examine the gums, inner cheeks, and underside of the tongue.
The Physical Exam
In addition to the visual exam, the dentist will palpate (gently press) the cheeks, head, jawline, under the chin, and inside the oral cavity to detect any unusual masses or nodules. While the pressure applied during this step may cause discomfort or even mild pain, painless swellings could still indicate abnormalities elsewhere in the body.
After the Screening
It is important to understand that an oral cancer screening is not a diagnostic test, but a precautionary measure. If you smoke, use tobacco products, or consume alcohol heavily, you may be asked to return for more frequent screenings, even if no symptoms are present.
In some cases, results may show abnormalities that are not cancer-related but still require treatment. Early detection and intervention can significantly reduce future health risks.
