If you have minor issues with the color, shape, or size of one or more of your teeth, our dentist and the team at Timeless Dental may be able to help with a procedure known as dental bonding. What Is Dental Bonding Used For?

Dental bonding uses composite resin, which is shaped to restore the damaged tooth and then polished to blend with the surrounding teeth. It is often used for cosmetic purposes, such as improving the appearance of a discolored or chipped tooth. It can also be used to alter the shape or size of a tooth, close gaps between teeth, or make teeth appear longer. Additionally, bonding can protect an exposed portion of a tooth’s root caused by gum recession.

Procedure

Unless the tooth being treated is decayed, dental bonding typically does not require special preparation or anesthesia. Your dentist will begin by cleaning the affected tooth and then slightly etching the surface to roughen it. This helps the bonding material adhere more securely. A conditioning liquid will then be applied to further strengthen the bond. The bonding material, a tooth-colored, putty-like resin, is applied, molded, and smoothed into the desired shape and size. It is then hardened with an ultraviolet light or laser. Once hardened, your dentist will trim and shape the bonding to match your bite. Finally, the material is polished to match the sheen of the surrounding teeth. The entire procedure usually takes about 30 minutes to an hour for a single tooth. Additional teeth may require separate appointments.

Because bonding is prone to staining, it is recommended to avoid coffee, cigarette smoke, wine, and other substances that can cause staining after the procedure. Additionally, composite resin is not as strong as natural tooth enamel, so you should avoid putting excessive pressure on treated teeth, as this could cause damage. Over time, the bonding may need to be replaced.
